Clay Shirky looks at "cognitive surplus" -- the shared, online work we do with our spare brain cycles. While we're busy editing Wikipedia, posting to Ushahidi (and yes, making LOLcats), we're building a better, more cooperative world.
Two pages I created on Wikipedia are because of this principle: Levelator because I thought it was a great piece of free software video makers should use, and Lowry Digital because I wanted to know more about the company (which, at the time, had no official site), so I started the page more to learn than to teach.
